Mrs. Nell Smith Lawler, 98, of New Market, passed away on Monday at her home.  She was a Christian and a member of Locust Grove Baptist Church for more than 60 years.

She was a lifelong resident of Madison County and was an educator for many years having taught mainly at Riverton School.  She enjoyed flowers and working as a florist, playing dominoes with her friends, working in her garden, and traveling.  She loved her family and made it a point to be involved in the lives of her great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo B. Lawler and by her daughter, Lydia Tanley.

Surviving family members include her daughter and son-in-law, Sharron & Steve Calvert;  Her grandsons:  Kris & Kinzi Tanley, Jeremy & Regina Calvert, and David & Megan Calvert;  Her granddaughter,  Kasie & Andrew Barber.  She is also survived by seven great-grandchildren and by her brother, Sam Smith Jr.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 3pm at Locust Grove Baptist Church.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  Burial will follow the service and will be in Locust Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite charity.
