Nelena Gunn Smith, age 92 of Winchester, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at Southern Tennessee Regional Health Systems. She was born in Pelham on January 27, 1932, to the late William Roscoe and Georgia (Wilson) Gunn. A devoted homemaker, Nelena had a “green thumb” and enjoyed tending to her garden, as well as cooking and baking. She spent much of her time watching birds, especially redbirds and hummingbirds, reading, and working word search puzzles. Some of her fondest memories were of going fishing and trips to Florida, the Grand Canyon, and Gatlinburg. The matriarch of her family, Nelena cherished the time spent with her beloved family, especially her brothers and her four-legged best friend, Baby. Her family and friends will remember her selfless soul and loving and caring nature mixed with a little feistiness. Nelena was a member of Pelham Methodist Church, where she had attended as a child, but she most recently attended Chapmans Chapel Nazarene Church in Pelham when she was able. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Charles Smith; son, Don Ray Smith; siblings, Bill Gunn, Hoover Gunn, and JoAnn Thursby; and son-in-law, Troy Brown. Nelena is survived by her loving daughter, Dana Brown; grandchildren, Mandy (Kojack) Haney, Stephanie (Michael) Clark, and Shelley (Scott) Halloway; great-grandchildren, Karleigh, Kyleigh, Kameron, Mookie, Kody, Michael, Derrick, Ryder, Braedon, and Bella; great-great-grandchildren, Addison, Emerson, Madelynn, Blakelyn, and Haleigh Rae; siblings, Tom Gunn, and Hamp Gunn; and several nieces and nephews. A special thanks to Dr. Gammada and staff for the wonderful care he provided Nelena. Visitation will be from 12-2pm on Sunday, November 24, 2024, at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home. Funeral Services will follow at 2:00 pm in the Chapel of Moore-Cortner Funeral Home with Pastor Tim Parson officiating. Interment will be at Warren Cemetery with Kojack, Michael, Scott, Kameron, Derrick, and Braedon serving as pallbearers.
