Mrs. Casey, who died April 2, 2015, was born February 12, 1931, in Toledo, Ohio to Cletus Bernard Thornton and Mary Carey Thornton. She grew up in Van Wert, Ohio, graduated from St. Mary’s Academy, and St. Mary’s of Notre Dame College in South Bend, Indiana with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She taught school in Ft. Wayne, Indiana and Miami, Florida, (where she meets her husband), and then Harrisburg, Pa and Decatur, Alabama, where they moved in 1959. They remained in Decatur and had five children who all attended St. Ann’s School. Mrs. Casey was an active member of St. Ann’s Church and School. While her children attended, she was a secretary of the Board of Education, Chairman of the Room Mothers Organization (and room mother). After her children were grown she worked as secretary for the Chairman of the Morgan County Commission for 18 years. She was an avid golfer when she and her husband were charter members of the Burningtree Country Club and she had a hole in one on the 12th hole. She enjoyed participating in the Morgan County golf tournaments when she worked there, and won a set of irons one year. She was one of two women who played. After she retired, she volunteered at Decatur General Hospital and returned to play golf with friends once a week. Mrs. Casey was preceded in death by her daughter, Mary Michele Casey; her husband, Bill Casey; and her brother, John W. Thornton.
She is survived by her children, Kevin Casey, Lawrence Casey (Jessica), Timothy Casey (Tracy), and Laura Ann Doss; four grandchildren, Chloe Reese Casey, Madison Tillery and William Parker Casey and Sophia Michele Casey.
Pallbearers will be Tim, Larry and Kevin Casey, Bernie Hopenjans, Billy Little and John Doss.
