The spirit of Nancy Carolyn (Brooks) Huffaker, at the age of 82, slipped away peacefully on Wednesday morning, September 21,2022 into the bosom of the Lords keeping until that day of His return. She was the daughter of the late James Weaver and Flora Virginia (Lay) Brooks of Meridianville. She was born in Huntsville, Alabama on March 2,1940 and grew up on a farm in Meridianville with four half-siblings. A beloved mother, devoted to her family, a Christian, and a kind and compassionate southern lady.
Nancy enjoyed many activities such as promoting the Huntsville Ballet, cooking, and traveling. She attended Meridianville Junior High School where she won the “Outstanding 4-H Club Girl of the County” award in 1952 by placing first place in club work for each of four activities: poultry, sewing projects, participation in dress reviews and cooking. She also chose the name of the school’s yearbook “Eaglet” that year. “The Eaglet” meaning – – young people searching and bring in the news. Nancy was a graduate of Hazel Green High School where she was crowned Homecoming Queen in 1957. She made a welcome speech and presented her attendants with a rose from her bouquet. She then introduced the “A” team players. A large crowd was present at this event. Nancy was also a member of The National Beta Club. It recognized outstanding character, achievement and leadership. After graduating, she attended the University of Alabama to pursue a degree in education and became a life-long “Roll Tide” fan.
Nancy loved to meet and interface with people. She met her future husband, Fredrick Huffaker, while working at a local bank. They were smitten with each other from the start, a stunning beauty in her twenties and the love of each other’s life. They were married on February 18,1967 in The First Baptist Church in Huntsville.
Nancy and Fredrick were married for over 55 years, producing two children: Randall Allan Huffaker (Anne) of Tuscaloosa and Michelle H. Little (David) of Huntsville and five grandchildren: Ella Grace Huffaker, Bebe Piper Huffaker, Charles Edgar Huffaker, Noah Scott Little and Emie Caroline Little.
Nancy was a follower of Jesus Christ since early childhood and a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Huntsville since the early 1960’s where she and Fredrick taught Sunday School Classes and sang in the church choir for many years.
She loved and supported the Community Ballet School (CBS) and the Huntsville Civic Ballet Company (HCBC). On one occasion an Antebellum Garden Party was held on August 26, 1983, the proceeds from the party support the CBS AND HCBC. The dresses worn by hostesses at the party were authentic reproductions of antebellum gowns, reminiscent of the days prior to 1860. Hostesses, including Nancy, who wore an antebellum gown verify the aura of romance that overtakes them the minute they step into one of these gowns. They report feeling completely feminine and maybe envisioning themselves in front of a southern mansion. Nancy loved the social events of Huntsville. It was and still is a special place to live and raise a family.
Her passing leaves a deep hole in the hearts and lives of those who knew and loved her. People remember her beautiful smile. She had a loving, kind and good spirit with a gentle presence, yet with rules and customs of a southern lady that will be sorely missed.
Visitation will be September 26 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm followed by a funeral service in the First Baptist Church Chapel. Interment will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery.
