Monette Mathews Wells of Munford, AL entered her heavenly home on December 17, 2022. She was eighty years old.
Monette was born on September 19, 1942, in Covington County, Alabama to William Marion and Louise Hataway Mathews. She was their fourth daughter.
Monette was a light in a dark room and her personality radiated which caused people to naturally be drawn to her. Monette never met a stranger and was a mother, grandmother, sister, friend, and a devoted public servant for over thirty years.
Monette graduated from Andalusia High School with high academic honors in May of 1960. Monette was awarded a full scholarship to Montevallo University, but due to family circumstances was unable to attend the university. This challenge laid the foundation for her to insist and ensure that her own children were afforded the opportunity to achieve a college education.
Monette married Robert Gordon Wells on October 7, 1961. Together, they had three children-Brian, Kathy, and Chris.
Monette moved quite a bit in the early days of her marriage to Robert. They began their marriage living in Montgomery, AL as Robert worked for the Alabama Transportation department. They then moved to Huntsville, AL; then they moved to Camden, AL; and they eventually moved to Munford, AL. The move to Munford was the last move for Monette; they first lived in Haynes trailer park in Munford before building their home on Alabama Highway 21. Monette lived the remainder of her life in her home in Munford, AL.
As a public servant, Monette worked many positions. Monette began her career as a bookkeeper for Delta Electric Company in Andalusia, AL. After she married, she moved to Huntsville, AL and she became a mother as this is where Brian was born. She then acquired a job at Boeing Space and Rocket Center as the lead secretary to the site administrator. After leaving Huntsville and eventually settling in Munford, Monette began her career with the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services in Talladega, AL. In this position, Monette served in excess of thirty years retiring in 2001. Monette was fluent in sign language, having taught herself as she put it “so that I could help the deaf clients; I want to know what they are saying to me.”
Not one to stop moving, Monette began her career with Rainbow Omega in Eastaboga, AL but she soon discovered a different opportunity with The Garden Center in Anniston, AL and she worked there until her health ultimately forced her into retirement.
Monette was always a worker, so much so that at one point she held a full-time job as well as two part time jobs (one at night as well as one on the weekends).
Monette was a very determined individual, and this determination carried her through many difficult situations. Monette loved flowers and helped many individuals design their yards and beautify their landscapes. Monette loved helping individuals design and create container gardens as well as potted plants. If you wanted to know what a plant was, Monette was your go-to person being a self-taught master gardener.
Monette is survived by her children and grandchildren:
Son Dr. Brian Wells and his wife Kim; daughter Kathy Wells Watson and her husband Tom; son Chris Wells and his wife Michelle; grandchildren Blaine Brocato, Addison Wells, Dawson Wells, and Patton Watson; great-granddaughters Stormii Wells and Kaleigh Brocato.
Monette is also survived by her sister Nadine Parker of Andalusia, AL and Rachel Ziglar of Birmingham, AL as well as many nieces and nephews.
Monette is preceded in death by her parents Marion and Louise Mathews and sister Wilda Godwin.
Monette’s celebration of life service will be held Thursday, December 22, 2022, at 2:00pm at Heritage Baptist Church in Heflin, AL.
