Mitchell Lewis Hopkins was born April 1, 1939 and entered Glory on March 12, 2017. His family will receive friends Tuesday, March 14, 2017, 6-8 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home, Tuscumbia. His funeral service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the funeral home chapel with Brother Thomas Thornton and Brother Jerry Rea officiating. Burial will follow in Guy Cemetery.
Mr. Hopkins served in the U. S. Airforce, stationed at Thule, Greenland. He was the owner of Mama and Papa’s Restaurant in Russellville prior to his retirement. He later received a degree in Education and was a substitute teacher for twelve years at local Colbert County and Tuscumbia City Schools. He also tutored math at North-West Shoals Community College and was an inspiration to his students.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William Lewis and Vera Hinson Hopkins and brothers, Mack Hinson and Carroll Hopkins. He was a member of First Southern Baptist Church and loved his church family. Family, friends, and children knew him as the “Candy Man”.
He is survived by his wife of twenty-eight years, Verna Hopkins and children, Sharyn Blanton (Mike), Suzanne Carroll (Ralph), Misty Hopkins and fiancée Chad Terry, Donna Carrigan (Kenny), Carl Sanderson (Shelley), and Russell Sanderson (Debra), ten grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and brother, Dane Hopkins (Glenda).
Pallbearers are Bradley Kimbrough, Benji Kimbrough, Russell Sanderson, Barron Hamilton, Brady Page, Bobby Stults and Peyton Kimbrough.
