Millie Seal was born on December 3, 1941, in Foster, Alabama. Her loving parents, Thomas and Mary Emma White, raised her and her five siblings in Tuscaloosa, Alabama where she graduated with honors from Druid High School, class of 1960. She studied at both Spelman College and Stillman College.
A devout Christian, Millie taught Sunday school, served as a Deaconess and member of the Youth Committee at New Jerusalem Baptist Church. She was also an active member of the Progressive National Baptist Convention. Her love of God and the teachings of the Bible guided and nourished her soul throughout her life, and her friends and family have all, in some way, benefited from her essence as a child of God.
Millie led an active life before she succumbed to a long illness. An avid sports fan, she loved tennis and was a devoted fan of Crimson Tide football and basketball, as well as the Tennessee Titans. Millie was herself an accomplished bowler, competing in numerous bowling tournaments. She was also a member of the United States Bowling Congress and the National Black Bowling Association.
Millie is survived by her loving husband and partner of sixty-three years, Minister Hosie Seal; and her three children: Marcia Hatchett (husband Marcus), Hosie Seal Jr., and Paul Seal (wife Linda). Millie was a devoted grandmother to six grandchildren: Megan Chatman, Morgan Hale (husband Kirt), Hosie Seal III, Daniel Seal, Jorden Seal and Mayah Seal. She also had three great-grandchildren: Dia Hale, Dakota Hale, and Dallas Hale. Three siblings survive Millie: Belle Taylor-McGhee (husband James), Ethel Lee and Garry White Sr.
Her late sister, Carrie Lee White, and her late brother, Thomas White Jr., are laid to rest in Tuscaloosa alongside her late parents, Thomas and Mary Emma White. Four nephews and a niece survive Millie: Clarence “Tony” Taylor, Thomas White III, Masai Ali, Garry White Jr., her niece, Gabrielle White as well as two great-nephews: Noah Ali, and Thomas White IV. Millie had a host of first and second cousins, including Early “Buddy” White, and Curtis White. Other close family members include siblings-in-law: Stacey Anderson, W.D. Seal (wife Shirley), L.B. and Elaine Seal (deceased), Lillie Seal Norman, Benjamin Seal, Evelyn and Howard Prewitt (deceased), Willa M. Rich (deceased); Goddaughter, Ebony Cromartie, and a host of nephews and nieces.
Our memories of Millie will surely include her smile and her laughter. We will always remember how she took the time and care to call just to let us know she was thinking of us. No one could have been kinder and more generous than Millie. She will be missed by all who were blessed to have loved and known her.
