Mildred “Babbs” O’Donnell Lundy

Mildred “Babbs” O’Donnell Lundy was born in Odessa, Texas on April 10,1933. She grew up in Midland and Fort Worth, Texas and graduated from Pascal High School. She was a proud daughter of the Republic of Texas and registered First Family of Texas.

Babbs attended the University of Kansas where she met her husband, Joseph T. Lundy Sr who played on the football team. She remained an avid Jayhawk fan the rest of her life. She went on to receive her BS degree in Physical Education from Alabama A&M, and her Master of Education in Traffic Safety from the University of Montevallo.

Babbs taught many years in Huntsville public school system at Weatherly Elementary, Davis Hills, and Johnson High School. Courses included PE, Alabama History, and Driver’s Education. She loved sports and continued to attend Johnson sporting events for many years after retiring. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church serving as deacon and elder and in many other capacities. She loved being around the children at church- serving at Wednesday night activities and VBS were high lights for her. She was also active in community and civic affairs.

Babbs traveled extensively with friends and her grandchildren.

Babbs loved her family dearly. She was the one who made sure the family gathered every summer at the lake, and oh what fun was had at those gatherings! She also shared her love of travel with her grandchildren. There were many trips to the beach for the older ones and later the younger were treated to cruises all over the world!

Babbs was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph T. Lundy Sr;parents, Roland “Cy” and Gabe O’Donnell; and brother Roland E. O’Donnell Jr. She is survived by her daughters, Libby Penuel (Scott) and Lisa Stephens (Ron); son, Joseph T. “Bo” Lundy Jr (Nancy); seven grandsons: Christopher Penuel (Marie), Michael Penuel (Cindy), Hunter Penuel (Judy), Joseph T Lundy III, Aaron Stephens, Stephen Lundy, and Jordan Stephens (Taylor); four great-granddaughters: Mya, Miah,  Madelynne, and Marleigh Penuel; two great-grandsons, Lundy and Declan Penuel; sister-in-law Violeta G O’Donnell;  five nephews, three nieces, and many dear friends and relatives.

A special thanks to the group of caregivers that lovingly cared for her through this past year, you all are the best!

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to International Missionary Fellowship (haitihospital.org), the Presbyterian Home for Children in Talladega or First Presbyterian Capital Campaign.

Memorial service at First Presbyterian Church Huntsville, AL. on August 25,2024 at 2:00pm with reception to follow.
