Michael Lee Herbert was born in Williamson County, Tennessee July 13, 1954 to the late William Haley and Kathryn Sullivan Herbert. He joined them in Heaven on January 30, 2021.
The family moved to Columbia in 1963. Mike graduated from Central High School in 1972. He attended Columbia State Community College. In 1974, Mike enlisted in the U.S. Army to purse his passion of flying.
Mike was assigned to Ft. Polk, LA for basic training, then Ft. Rucker, AL for flight school. From there he went to Ft. Campbell, Hawaii, back to Ft. Campbell where three years later, he joined the newly formed Special Operations Delta Force. Mike then attended fixed wing training at Fr. Rucker, AL and spent his last years in a Security Intelligence Unit in Orlando, FL and Honduras. Over his 22 year career he flew Huey, Blackhawk, and Cobra helicopters, and U21 and C12 planes.
After retiring from the U.S. Army, he was in small construction for 11 years and then worked side by side with the love of his life in her catering business.
Mike was patriotic, intelligent, generous, patient, kind, loving, and always helpful to family and friends.
Mike was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Rufus Leroy and Leona Hatfield Sullivan; Clio Mai Bell and George W.C. Herbert, Sr.
He leaves behind to cherish memories his wife, Pamela Boehms Herbert; daughters, Eliza (Dave) Bardin and Kathleen (David) Akima; grandson, Ethan Akima; siblings, Linda (Philip) Farmer, Steve (Jennifer) Herbert, Randy Herbert, Melony Herbert, Jody (Phyllis) Herbert; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 1:00 P.M. at Mt. Pleasant First United Methodist Church with Reverend Phillip Wright officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home.
