Funeral service for Michael L. Harvey, age 66, of Decatur, will be Sunday, January 4, 2015, 2:00 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wayne Penn and Rev. Clyde Ledlow officiating. The family will receive friends for two hours prior to service. Interment will be in Hartselle City Cemetery.
A retired Decatur City Police Sergeant, Michael L. Harvey, passed away on January 1, 2015, at Decatur Morgan Hospital. Sergeant Harvey was born on December 7, 1948, in Los Angeles, CA, to the late Pearl and Robert Harvey. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack Harvey and Bob Harvey, and one sister, Carol Hall (Carl). In 1964, he moved to Alabama to live with his uncle and aunt, Will and Glenda Swanson, and is a graduate of Morgan County High School.
Mike enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1968. He joined the Decatur City Police Department in March of 1971. During his 36 years with the DPD, he received numerous awards, such as the Decatur Optimist Club Law Enforcement Officer of the Year (1999), the Federal Bureau of Investigation Appreciation Certificate (1999), the NAMI 2006 Professional Law Enforcement Award, and the Morgan County Law Enforcement Award of Merit (2008). Officer Harvey rose to the rank of Sergeant and retired from the Decatur City Police Department in February of 2008.
Sergeant Harvey is survived by his wife, Linda, whom he met in 1973, while doing his civic duty, when he wrote her a citation for speeding; one daughter, Melissa Estes (Keith) of Hartselle; two grandchildren, Kaleb Estes and Kiersten Simpson (Doug); and two sisters, Bonnie Jordan of Decatur, and Linda Thurston of Rice Lake, WI.
Pallbearers will be the Decatur City Police Department Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be made to Gideons International, P. O. Box 5111, Decatur, AL 35602, the American Heart Association, or Hospice of the Valley.
