Mercedes Marie Capello Lowman, 88, of Huntsville, passed away on Thursday. She was called Mercy by her family and friends. She was born in Lockhart, Texas and graduated from Lockhart High School. She earned her Associates Degree from the University of Texas in Austin. Mercy was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Her favorite thing to do was spend time with family and everyone loved her cooking. Her grandchildren always looked forward to having her banana bread, German chocolate cake, oatmeal, and vermicelli. She loved attending school events with her grandchildren and cheering them on at sporting events.

Mercy was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Madison, AL. She was a devoted homemaker, but also worked at Nichols Research Corp in Huntsville, AL. She spoke fluent Spanish and later became an ESL teacher in Albertville, AL. She found teaching English to her Hispanic students very rewarding and this was a highlight in her serving others during her life. She was a four-time breast cancer survivor and while in her 80’s she spoke to the local cancer support group to encourage other women who were facing breast cancer for the first time to be strong and fight. Her vibrant personality, strength, determination, faith, and compassion were admired by all who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Felita Montoya Capello and Norberto Capello; her sister, Linda Capello; and her brother, Junior Capello. Survivors include her children, Alan Lowman and wife, Sarah, Boyd Lowman, and fiancé, Janet Landefeld, and Kent Lowman all of Huntsville, AL; grandchildren, Grady Lowman of Runnemede, NJ, Mandy Lowman of Huntsville, AL, Grant Lowman and wife, Taylor, of Huntsville, AL, Lily Cowan of Huntsville, AL, Leslie Burton of Collinsville, AL and Laine Mansell of Centre, AL; great-grandchild, Skylar Lowman of Huntsville, AL; sister, Diane Voigt of Lockhart, TX; brother, Ernest Capello of Carlsbad, NM; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 24, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home in Huntsville, AL from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm. A graveside service and burial will follow at a later date in Lockhart, Texas.
