Services for Mr. Melvin Donald “Fit-It” Williams, age 87 of Ashland, will be held on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Harold McCain officiating. Burial with Military Honors will follow at the Ashland City Cemetery.
Mr. Williams passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at the Clay County Nursing Home. He was born in Childersburg, Al but was a Clay County Resident most of his life. After High School, he entered into the U.S. Air Force and served for 8 years; he served two of those years in Libya, South Africa. After his stint in the military, he worked for over 20 years as an Appliance Repairman with Sears. Mr. Williams was often referred to as “Fit-It” because of his knowledge and experience. His last 20 years before retirement, he worked as a rural mail carrier for the city of Ashland. Outside of work, he enjoyed thrifting and going to antique stores, and he fixed hundreds of household appliances and small engines in his spare time. He also worked with concrete and was good at welding. According to his family, He could fix anything and everything, but would absolutely not cut grass. Mr. Williams was an avid gardner, enjoyed planting peanuts and vegetables, and had the gift of gab, because enjoyed talking to the hundreds of families he knew through the postal service and appliance repair business. He never met a stranger, and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Annie P. Williams of Ashland; four daughters: Brenda Williams Harris (Dwight) of Ashland, Janet Williams Hallmark (Tim) of Goodwater, Cindy Jo Brown (Jacky), and Tammy Gortney (Vick), both of Ashland; four sons: Ellis Williams of Opelika, and Ronald Williams, Marty Williams, and Kevin Williams, all of Ashland; 10 grandchildren: Erin Williams (Marshall), Don Triplett, Reina Brown, John David Brown, Zoe Williams, Ava Williams, Shawnee Hill (Cody), Ethan Gortney, Mason Gortney, and Jacky Brown Jr.; 6 great-grandchildren: Heath and Mackenzie Craft, Sawyer and Cooper Weathington, and Jerrhett and Victoria Hill; five brother: Alton Williams of Opelika, Howard Williams (Judy), Morris Williams (Becky), both of Ashland, Edsel Williams (Linda) of Dadeville, and Elvin Williams (Deborah) of Alex City; one sister, Nettie Sparks of Lineville; one sister-in-law, Monica Williams of Montgomery; and several nieces, nephews and extended family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Clentell Robinson Williams; and one brother, Hershell Williams.
Active Pallbearers will be Don Triplett, John David Brown, Ethan Gortney, Mason Gortney, Dustin Bowen, and Mike Love.
A visitation will take place on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Benefield Funeral Home in Ashland from 11:00 A.M. until service time at 2:00P.M.
