Melba Jean Young, 94, passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2024, at The Meadows. She was born May 16, 1930, in Mantachie to Cecil Clarence and Marie Beene DeVaughn. She worked for 25 years at Charm Step and later worked 20 years for housekeeping at Itawamba Community College. She was a devoted member of Tombigbee Baptist Church and proudly held the title of oldest member for a few years. Jean loved to fish and spend time with her family and never missed her standing Saturday appointment with Megan at the beauty shop as long as she was able.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 20, at the Tombigbee Baptist Church with Bro. Joseph Jones and Bro. Terry Paul Graham officiating. Burial will be in the Stephens Cemetery. McNeece-Morris Funeral Home of Mantachie is in charge of arrangements.
She is survived by two sons, Eddie Young and Pat Young (Dian), and one daughter, Stephanie Davis, all of Mantachie; 8 grandchildren, Beth Callender (Terry) of Lincoln, Nebraska; Lance Young (Sheila) of Pontotoc; Heather Blankenship (West), Mallory Campbell (Cory), and Kasey Lunceford (Kevin), all of Mantachie; Kimberly Burgess (Aaron) of Cumberland, Andrea Tate (Douglas) of Long Beach, and Richard Davis (Stacy) of West Point; 23 great-grandchildren, Justin Callendar (Christa), Kimberly Callender, Dawson Young, Maddie Young, Laken Mize, Kristin Minor, Hunter Brewer, Zoey Blankenship, Beau Blankenship, Emersyn Campbell, Grady Campbell, Jasper Franks, Tuff Lunceford, Kerrigan Lunceford, Kouper Shook, Mary Margaret Burgess, Ashtyn Tate, Kynadee Tate, Taytum Tate, Korbyn Ann Tate, Baylor Tate, and Kendal Davis; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Olon S. Young, on December 29, 1988; her parents, Clarence and Marie DeVaughn; and her sister, Hazel Dillard Miller.
Pallbearers will be Jasper Franks, Tuff Lunceford, Lance Young, Dawson Young, Terry Callender, and Kevin Lunceford.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Hodges, Ricky Fleming, James Dillard, and Mike Robison.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 19, at the McNeece-Morris Funeral Home in Mantachie and from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at Tombigbee Baptist Church.
