Mavis Jones Johnson, age 97 of Hazel Green, Alabama went to her heavenly home on May 9, 2024, at Madison Manor nursing home in Madison, Alabama.

Mavis was born March 10, 1927, near Hazel Green, Alabama to Oliver Roy Cantrell and Dollie Curry Cantrell. She was a teacher for many years in Alabama, Louisiana, and Tennessee. She was a Baptist pastor’s wife and served the Lord by his side for 36 years. She loved her family, cooking for everyone, sewing, gardening, and doing crafts. She loved making quilts for her family and teaching others to quilt.

She is survived by her daughters, Scherrie Turner of Priceville, Alabama, Debbie Gaines (James) of Dawsonville, Georgia; grandchildren, Steve Turner (Melissa), Julie Smith (Bobby), Emily Mason (Mark) Chris Gaines (Jessica) Jenny Brothers (B.J.); 11 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Rev. Jasper E. Jones and John Johnson; brothers, Felton Cantrell, Roy Cantrell; sisters, Myrtice Wilson, Cecil Hastings, Geroma Carden.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Vison Deploy fund at First Baptist Church 225 Hunt Drive, Hazel Green, Alabama 35750

Visitation will be Saturday, May 18, 2024, from 2:00 – 3:00 with funeral services following at 3:00. Her son-in-law, Dr. James Gaines and Rev David Spiers officiating.
