Mary Vernon “Tay” Samford Williams – Obituary

Mary Vernon “Tay” Samford Williams was born December 2, 1928, in Opelika and died on April 7, 2013, at the Decatur Morgan Hospital. She was predeceased by her parents, Yetta Glenn Samford Sr. and Mary Denson Samford.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Richard DeLamar Williams III; her brother, Yetta Glenn Samford Jr. (Mary) of Opelika; her children, Margaret W. Johnston (Rip), Caroline W. Sanders (Rick), Ginny W. Sanders (Randy) and Richard DeLamar Williams IV (Nancy); her grandchildren, Elizabeth Johnston Stone (John), Mary Johnston, Carrie Sanders Hart (Andrew), Kate Sanders Schemmel (Derek), Richard Sanders, Lauren, Wesley and Will Sanders, Richard, Blair and Katherine Williams; and one great-grandchild, Katherine Hart.

She is a graduate of Randolph-Macon College for Women where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. She later studied at Alabama Polytechnic Institute and the University of Alabama. Tay was a co-founder and member of Parents and Children Together (PACT), a past president of the Decatur Junior Service League, an active member and Sunday school teacher of the First United Methodist Church, and was active in various other community services.

The family will receive friends at First United Methodist Church today, April 9, 2013, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. A memorial service will follow at 2:30 p.m. with The Reverend Dr. Rudy Guess and The Reverend Sandra Locke Godbey officiating. Berryhill Funeral Home is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to First United Methodist Church, 805 Canal Street NE, Decatur, AL 35601, or to PACT, P.O. Box 1247, Decatur, AL 35602.
