Mary Underwood passed away on Monday, October 7, 2024.
Mary was born and grew up in Manchester, TN. She attended undergraduate school at David Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN. She married Dr. Mack Underwood in 1956, and they recently celebrated their 68th anniversary. They met at UT Memphis where she graduated from dental hygiene school and he from dental school.
She was predeceased by her parents, Thurman Dee Baker, Sr. and Ezelle Norris Baker, and her brother, Thurman Dee Baker, Jr.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. Mack Underwood; son, Steve Underwood; daughters, Debra Cofer (Rick) and Lisa Pomar (Duane); and granddaughters, Anna Underwood and Laura Cofer.
Mary always enjoyed cooking for and visiting with her family. She also enjoyed her volunteer jobs with Meals on Wheels, the Huntsville Botanical Gardens and Galaxy of Lights. She gave educational tours of the garden to children and served as co-chairman of the Education Committee. She participated in the local Dental Auxiliary, serving as state president. She gave dental health talks to preschool and elementary students and taught preschool classes at Twickenham Church of Christ.
The family extends special thanks to Kathy Underwood for her help with caregiving. Special thanks also go to Sharon Clark-Govia and Melissa Moody for their caregiving services over the past six months.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, October 11, 2024, at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. The funeral will follow in the chapel with Brock Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
