Mary Jean Hammons – Obituary

Mary Jean Hammons of Athens, AL passed away Tuesday, February 17, 2015 at the
age of 81. Ms. Hammons was born on April 1, 1933 in Athens, AL to the late Ross
Denton Hammons and lIa Goodin Hammons. She was preceded in death by her
husband, Bruce Bouchet; sister, Margaret Hammons Lindsay; and, brother, Thomas L.
Hammons, Sr. A Celebration of Life will be held Thursday, February 19, 2015 at 6:00
p.m. at Limestone Chapel Funeral Home.

Originally from the Tanner area, Ms. Hammons graduated from Tanner High School.
During the 1950s, Ms. Hammons together with her sister Margaret Lindsay and niece
Betty Taylor were featured on Birmingham and Decatur TV shows. On special
occasions, the trio was enhanced with brother, Thomas Lee Hammons. During this
time, she was employed at Redstone Arsenal as a member of the Von Braun team.
She served as the chartist for this elite group.

With music being the love of her life, she always aspired for greater things. She moved
to New York in 1957. Being the creative music director for Oak Publications, she
reviewed books for Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, the Supremes, and many other renowned
artists. She won many awards in book design, art direction and photography. After
participating in many acting and voice classes, Ms. Hammons started a private school
for Actors and Singers while in New York. She became the voice and acting coach for
several stars that were on “All my Children” as well as Broadway and the movies. She
was also a member of a folk trio called “The All Night Singers” and toured many cities.
Ms. Hammons made several recordings with Columbia Records, Cameo-Parkway
Records, and Reprise Records (Warner Brothers).

When relocating back to Alabama, she brought her many talents and skills to the area
while implementing them thru her private school, On-Stage Seminars for Voice and
Acting.

Survivors include five nephews: Bobby Lindsay, Larry Lindsay, Rev. Thomas L.
Hammons, Jr., Jerry Hammons, and Dr. John Hammons; two nieces: Betty Lindsay
Taylor and Carol Ann Hammons; sister-in-law, Annette Hammons; eight great nephews;
six great nieces; five great-great nieces and nine great-great nephews.
