Mary Cherry Steger Hooper age 86, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2024.
Cherry is survived by her husband Roger Hooper, sisters Marguerite Oakes, Ruth Svestka, and Carolyn Steger. and predeceased by her parents John Charles Steger and Celeste Coleman Steger.
Cherry was born in Huntsville, AL, and lived on the family farm at ‘Steger’s curve’ while attending Huntsville High School. She attended Wesleyan University in Macon, GA. then married and moved to Connecticut. After several moves between
Connecticut, Chicago, and New York, Cherry settled in Elmira, NY, finished college at Elmira College, and had a 32-year teaching career in Horseheads, NY.
In 1995, Cherry attended her 40th. high school reunion re-meeting Roger a classmate. They married and moved back to AL near New Market where her mother grew up. In retirement, Cherry enjoyed growing hybrid daylilies, birding, and travel.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 13, at 2 PM at Central Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 406 Randolph Ave., Huntsville, AL 35801.
