Mary C. Felkins, 94, died quietly in her sleep at NHC-Moulton  early Friday morning.  She had a long career as an elementary school teacher in Morgan County and Decatur schools, finishing her career at West Morgan Elementary.

Mary was born in Florence Alabama to Jesse Claude  and Vera Blakney Cooper  and  graduated from Florence State Teachers College (now known as Univ of North Alabama) where she met and married  John Robert Felkins. The young couple eventually settled in Decatur where they raised two sons, Robert   and  Roger.  Mary was widowed in 1982.  She was active in Central United Methodist Church until the pandemic restricted her activities.  She was happily enjoying her life at Riverside Senior Living (in Decatur)  where she was named “Miss Congeniality” by the staff for her wonderful nature and kindness to so many.

Mary is survived by her sons Robert (Andrea) of Savannah GA and Roger (Lisha) of Hillsboro AL She was predeceased by her parents and her brother J. Claude Cooper Jr.  (Smyrna TN).  She was the beloved grandmother “ Nan” to 4 grandchildren John Robert of Seattle WA, Stephen Cooper (Lisa) of Philadelphia PA, Katherine Elizabeth (Jonathan) of Baltimore MD, and Haley Kathleen  (engaged to Morgan Finley of Madison AL) She was blessed to have 3 great grandchildren Jack, Vera and Olivia who all were able to visit her in Decatur., Despite the geographic distances, Mary was proud to have attended the college graduations  of all four grand children and the weddings of grandson  Stephen and granddaughter Katie.  She had hoped to be there for Haley and Morgan this summer.

Mary survived an early battle with breast cancer, which has touched so many.  In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to your favorite breast cancer cause or specifically to Living Beyond Breast Cancer, (LBBC.ORG) online or at 40 Monument Road, Suite 104   Bala Cynwyd PA 19004.

Funeral services will be graveside at Roselawn Cemetery in Decatur AL at 2:00 on Sunday, March 26, 2023 with Ridout’s Brown-Service Funeral Home.
