Mary Anne Dougherty, 68, of Huntsville passed away on Wednesday 14 August 2024.

Mary was born in Orange, CA and moved to Placencia, CA where she lived until she joined the U.S. Army after graduation in 1974.  During her Army service, she was a nurse stationed at Fort Bragg NC.  After Mary’s enlistment ended she continued working in the medical field until she earned her engineer technician certification.  Mary moved “temporarily” to Huntsville in 1986 and worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  In 2003 she served her country for the second time when she went to Basra, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom as a civil service employee.

Mary was a member of Temple B’nai Sholom for many years.  She loved her Temple and her faith.  She volunteered in many areas of the Temple including as a board member, serving on various committees, learning to be a para rabbi and leading services on many occasions.

Mary’s greatest joy was her family and her most cherished title was Grand Doc to the grandchildren.  She was also creator of beautiful stained/leaded glass pieces, a former member of Women on Wheels and Huntsville HOTC.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents Charles T. Dougherty, Sr. and Katherine Marie Dougherty.

She is survived by her spouse Mary Hatfield, sons Brian (Rebecca) Jennings, Christopher (Ashley) Jennings, grandchildren Natalie Jennings and Jack Jennings, brother Charles T (Lisa) Dougherty, Jr., niece Jodi (Derek) Kirkland, nephew Shane Dougherty, great nephews Nixon and Grayson Kirkland, as well as many extended family members and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Temple B’nai Sholom at 103 Lincoln St. SE, Huntsville, AL on 8 September 2024 at 5:00 with Rabbi PJ Schwartz officiating.

In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Jewish Heritage Room at Temple B’nai Sholom or the Temple Building Fund.
