Marvin Popwell, 88, passed away peacefully at his home in Huntsville, Alabama on April 17th, 2023 surrounded by family.
He was born October 8th, 1934 in Clanton, Alabama. He joined the Air Force in 1955. After four years in the Air Force, he signed up to be in the inactive reserves and began teaching as a civilian instructor. He continued that path which led him to begin working at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville where he stayed and taught about the HAWK missile program up until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Vonda Langston Popwell; son, Wayne Popwell, Sr.; daughter, Rhonda Straits Rice; grandchildren Steven Straits (Corey Anna), Ryan Straits, Thomas Popwell, Samantha Straits, Jonathan Popwell, Raven Rice, and Corbin Rice; great-grandchildren Via “Fox” Straits, Abigail Popwell, Sadie Popwell, and Jayden Popwell; and sister, Vera “Polly” Abbott.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Popwell and Rosa Baker Popwell; brothers, John “Bill” Popwell, James “Jim” Popwell, Henry “Junior” Popwell, Early Popwell, J.W. Popwell, William Popwell, and Marshall Popwell; sister Vedie Clackler, grandson Wayne Popwell, Jr.; and granddaughter Diana Popwell.
Family and friends will gather at Berryhill Funeral Home on Friday, April 21 st for family visitation 12:30-1:00 P.M. and public visitation 1:00-2:00 P.M. Pastor Jay Schug of Community Fellowship Baptist Church will be officiating the service at 2:00 P.M.
Marvin and his wife, Vonda, have been members of Community Fellowship Baptist Church for 50 years. Pastor Jay Schug will accompany the family to the burial site at Taliaferro Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Steven Straits, Ryan Straits, Thomas Popwell, Corbin Rice, Cade Griffin, and James Barnett.
