Dr. Martha Van Beckett, 83, of Rogersville passed away at her home on Wednesday, October 25, 2023. Martha was a graduate of Sylacauga High School, Howard College (Samford University), MA Northwestern University, and a PhD in counseling from Auburn University. She served in the Peace Corp in Cameroon, Africa for two years where she taught physical education and math. She taught in the Huntsville City School system for many years. She taught middle school math, served as counselor at the middle school and high school level and later served as Assistant Superintendent for the system. She then served as Assistant Superintendent in the State Department of Education. She was an active member of Alabama Education Association and National Education Association. She also served as president of the Huntsville Education Association.

Her zest for life was manifested in her work and contributions to each community is which she lived. She was generous without regard for return. Family was important to her. When there was a need, she was there. Martha was a member of Rogersville United Methodist Church where she served in many leadership positions. She truly lived the life as taught by Jesus in the Gospels.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 2nd at Rogersville United Methodist Church from 12-1 with a memorial service following. Holly Woodall will be officiating. A graveside service will be held in Evergreen Cemetery in Sylacauga on Friday, November 3rd at 2p.m.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents, Eldridge and Tommye Beckett; brother, Tommy Eldridge Beckett, Jr.. she is survived by her sisters, Margaret Vance, Mary Tom Abernathy; special friend, Norma Norton; nieces, Suellen Vance, Annamarie Lasseter; nephews, Thom Vance, Trey Beckett and James Abernathy.

The family would like to extend a ‘thank you’ to the neighbors for their support during this difficult time. They also wish to thank Hospice of North Alabama; Lindsey and Bonny. They give their thanks to Visiting Angels for their service over the past few months. The sitters for last week were very special; Deanna Price and Yolanda Barnett.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Rogersville United Methodist Church or United Methodist Committee on Relief.
