Martha Hiserodt Johnson, 72, of Decatur, passed away on February 18, 2015, at Athens Rehab and Senior Care. She was surrounded by her children.
The memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on March 14, 2015, at Athens Church of God. Dr. Penne J. Laubenthal will be officiating. Mrs. Johnson donated her body to research with The MERI, Genesis Program in Memphis, Tennessee.
Martha was born in Memphis on December 3, 1942. She graduated from Decatur High School in 1960 and continued on to receive a B.A at Athens State College in 1965.
Martha was married to Dennis S. Johnson on December 18, 1965; they were married 18 years.
Martha worked as an educator for a number of school systems in Alabama and Tennessee throughout her life. She loved helping people and was employed by The Morgan County Department of Human Resources and Hope Place Crisis Services. She enjoyed writing poetry, working in her garden, her pets, and making others laugh. She was also actively involved in P.E.O Sisterhood and she was a Charter Member of Chapter Q, P.E.O in Decatur, which began in 1974. She had a smile and a laugh that was contagious.
Martha is survived by her brother, Edward F. Hiserodt, of Maumelle, AR; her son Matthew E. Johnson and wife, Laura Marks Johnson, of Athens; her daughter, Sarah K. Gilbert, husband, Michael L. Gilbert and two granddaughters, Isabella and Abigail Gilbert also of Athens.
She loved her nieces and nephews very much, Jennifer Cormier and Jill Freeland, of Colorado Springs, Stuart Hiserodt, of Austin, TX, Phillip Hiserodt, of Atlanta, GA, Ben and Julie Hiserodt, of Little Rock, AR, and Scott Hiserodt, of Malvern, AR.
Martha is preceded in death by her son, Gabe Johnson, of Athens; and both her parents, Mary R. Hiserodt, of Decatur, and Frank Hiserodt of, Wynn, AR.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to Genesis Legacy of Life, 44 S Cleveland St, Memphis, TN 38104.
