Martha Ellen Scott – Obituary

MarthaMartha Ellen Scott, age 84, passed away May 15, 2013, at her home after an extended illness. She is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, J. C. Scott. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Spry-Williams Chapel with the Reverend Jon Hauerwas and the Reverend Dewayne McDuff officiating. Burial will follow at Tri-Cities Memorial Gardens. The casket will lie in state from 11 AM to 1 PM prior to the service. For many years her friendly face and voice greeted every patient, visitor and staff member at Florence Hospital. As was her nature, she took the opportunity through her work to extend support and comfort to all who passed through those doors. She was honored to be chosen by the Florence Business and Professional Women’s Club as its 1972-1973 Woman of the Year for displaying outstanding service to her community. She was presented with the Florence Civic Award and the Florence Church Award. As an active member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church, she participated in the choir and women’s missions ministry. She served as President of Cumberland Presbyterian Women, Children’s Director, and Sunday School teacher. To honor 50 years of service, she was endowed as a Golden Perpetual Member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Women’s Ministry. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Scott is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Cathy Scott of Killen, Alabama, a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Jerry Hauerwas of Aiken, South Carolina, grandchildren Jeff Hauerwas, Wilson, NC, the Rev. Jon Hauerwas (Kara), Bellingham, Washington, Emily Reischman (Chris), Tanner, Alabama Nick Hahn, Apopka, Florida, great-grandchildren Chandler Hauerwas, Liam Hauerwas, Elliot Reischman and very special friend and devoted caregiver, Renee Glover. She was preceded in death by her father, Albert Nelson Dean, mother Maudie Dean Hudson, step-father, Mayor Hearl Britt Hudson, brother, Robert E. Dean, sister, Betty Jean Dean, and granddaughter, Jennifer Camille Hauerwas.
