Mark Steven Maynard, known affectionately as Mark or “Marky Mark or MM” to his friends and family, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on July 22, 2024, in Nashville, TN. Born on February 22, 1963, in Syracuse, NY, Mark’s zest for life and infectious laughter (or sarcasm) left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
Mark was the cherished husband of Rhonda Turner Maynard, loving and devoted father to Ryan Richard Maynard, Thomas Mark Maynard, and a loving stepfather to Mackenzie (Sam) Hutto, Madison Hammett, and Carlee Kendall. He was a beloved brother to Cindy Anne Maynard (Jeff Higgs) and beloved uncle to Morgan and Jordan Higgs and Pappy to his Step-grandchildren, Jennings Richard Hutto and Everett James Hutto. Mark’s joyful spirit and legacy will live on through his entire family. Mark is now reunited with his father, Richard William Maynard, with whom he shared a deep love for the great outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, or simply enjoying nature’s beauty with. Mark considered his father his hero and cherished their time together. Mark is also reunited with his Mother Emilia Katherine Maynard. Mark’s legacy is one of love, laughter, loyalty and leadership.
A proud alumnus of Northern Vermont University, formerly Johnson State College, Mark earned a Bachelor of Science degree that laid the foundation for his illustrious career. Since 1990, Mark has been with FedEx, where he holds the position of Managing Director of Worldwide Services. Mark’s relentless pursuit of excellence and strong work ethic have garnered numerous accolades throughout his tenure, including FedEx’s prestigious “Five Star” award (2002,2004,2007,2013 & 2024), as well as multiple honors in the Presidents Club (1997,2007,2008,2009,2014,2019,2020) and Ambassadors Club (2012,2013& 2016). Mark was also awarded the Outstanding Leadership award in 2011 and Vision Award in 2005.
Renowned for his work ethic, Mark led international sales teams across the United States and Asia, setting a high standard of leadership and inspiring his colleagues to reach their highest potential. His competitive spirit extended beyond the workplace; Mark approached every endeavor with a commitment to winning and a dedication to excellence.
Mark’s philanthropic efforts were as impactful as his professional accomplishments. He volunteered with the Wounded Warrior Project, United Way, TN Achieves, and Samaritan’s Purse, always striving to make a difference in the lives of others. His courage and adventuresome spirit were not only evident in his personal and professional life but also in his tireless dedication to service.
Mark, a dedicated sports enthusiast, possessed an unmatched passion for various teams including the Memphis Grizzlies, Tennessee Titans, Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and Boston Celtics. His visits to Fenway Park or the FedEx Forum Arena were cherished occasions where he enthusiastically supported his beloved teams. Mark demonstrated exceptional skill in golf, maintaining an impressive handicap of 2. Enjoying rounds with friends, family, and colleagues on the course was a source of great joy for him. These pursuits underscored his profound love for sports and his competitive spirit.
Beyond the rush of sports, Mark discovered deep joy in the tranquility of travel and the exhilaration of snow skiing alongside his family. From his early days working at ski lodges in Vermont during college, Mark embraced the motto of “first up and last down the mountain,” creating cherished memories that will endure within his family. His passion for Italian cuisine, all things chocolate, fine bourbon, and red wine was not only a reflection of his refined tastes but also a celebration of the warmth and camaraderie these indulgences brought to his life.
Witty, adventurous, and courageous, Mark lived a life full of moments that echoed the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children… to leave the world a bit better… to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.” Mark truly succeeded in every sense of the word, leaving a legacy of joy, resilience, and unwavering love.
As we bid farewell to Mark Steven Maynard, we celebrate a life lived to the fullest, a journey marked by laughter, adventure, and an indomitable spirit. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to have known him. Mark’s story is not one of goodbye but a beautiful reminder to embrace each day with the same fervor and passion he exemplified throughout his remarkable life.
