Marion "Dwight" WhisenantMarion Dwight Whisenant of Lacey’s Spring passed away October 20, 2024, at his home. After having been mostly homebound since April, he had just returned home from worshipping with his church family for the first time in several months. Dwight’s life-long faith given to him by his Savior led him from earthy worship to heavenly sight in less than an hour.
Visitation will be 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at New Canaan Baptist Church in Somerville. The funeral service will immediately follow with burial in the adjoining New Canaan Cemetery. Officiating pastors will be Robert Cruise, JD Thorne, and Dane Hays.
Dwight was born in Lacey’s Spring to Marion Clarence Whisenant and Geneva Earline Yancey Whisenant on December 18, 1949, as their sixth child. He graduated from Union Hill High School in 1968 and went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree from Jacksonville State University. He is also a graduate of the University of Wisconsin – Madison, Graduate School of Banking.
He had a long and faithful career in banking that culminated in serving the Arab and Morgan City communities as a loan officer for Regions Bank and First National Bank of Scottsboro. He also served his community well through the Arab Chamber of Commerce and as an early member and Treasurer of the Brindlee Mountain Volunteer Fire Department. He also served in the Alabama National Guard.
But Dwight found his joy in Jesus, which manifested itself not only in his career but much more in being a leading servant of his family and his church. Dwight was married to and loved Sandra for 53 years. He was a loving father to Kerrick for 48 years. He was a faithful member of New Canaan Baptist Church for almost 60 years, where he was a leader of the Royal Ambassadors, served as a deacon, and led as a deacon chairman.
Preceding him in death were his father, mother, three (3) sisters (Fraye Wigginton, Geraldine Whisenant, and Norma Johnson) and brother (Rayburn Whisenant). He is survived by his wife, Sandra Whisenant, son, Kerrick Whisenant (wife, Courtney), one sister (Sandra Hauck), and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be nephews, great nephews-in-law, and great, great nephews: Lynn Wigginton, Todd Whisenant, Brian Wimberly, Drew Colee, Daniel Dyson, Austin Dyson, Ryder Colee, and Calvin Malo.
