Marie Whiteside Linkins entered this life on August 17, 1924 and left for her eternal home on January 7, 2022. She was a Native of Huntsville, Alabama. A 1942 graduate of Huntsville High School where she played clarinet in the marching band and was instrumental in the naming of her high school team “Panthers.” She had a love for music and theatre. She graduated from Bob Jones University with a degree in Math and attended a music group while there led by Cliff Barrows.
She sometimes played the piano at Meadow Drive Baptist Church when needed. As a young child she attended the First Methodist Church along with the Holmes Street Methodist Church where her mother played for both churches on Sunday. She was a member of New Grove Baptist Church in Ardmore, Tn. Her son-in-law Roger Berry is the pastor. She knew the Lord and lived by example by being very kind, thankful and gracious even when she was struggling in her last days. She loved tea parties, movies, music telling stories (which were told in great detail), sudoku and jeopardy. Her first job was at Huntsville Manufacturing where she worked in the payroll office.
She was a member of the Pilot Club where she met her husband at an event sponsored by the Pilot Club for the military which took place in the ballroom on the top floor of the Russell Erskine Hotel.She married William Linkins in 1952. While he was in the Army she lived in Fort Knox, Ky and in Germany for a short time but came back to her hometown Huntsville, Al. After returning she worked for the Department of Defense at the Product Assurance Directorate where she retired in 1989 to help take care of her grandson who was going to have surgery.
She is preceded in death by be her parents: Charles and Corinne Holmes Whiteside; stepmother, Doris Carter Whiteside; brother, Charles Whiteside (Helen); sister, Corinne Whiteside Chontoian (Peter); spouse, William Linkins.
She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Reece (John), Gail Linkins (Dave Beaman), Doris Berry (Roger), Rebecca Wilburn (Buddy); eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews along with a host of friends.
An abundance of gratitude for Ms. Inisclee Hale and the loving care she gave our dear mom since Dec. 2020. Ms. Hale is a Godsent and we are so thankful for her.
Visitation will be on Wednesday January 12th from 11:30 – 1:30 P.M. at Berryhill. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M. at Maple Hill Cemetery with Roger Berry officiating.
