Margueritte Welch Hughes – Obituary

Margueritte-Hughes-1420463324Margueritte Welch Hughes departed this life on January 4, 2015 in Savannah, Tennessee at the age of 100 years and 8 days. She was born on December 27, 1914, daughter to the late Conway Sevier and Lena Margueritte Tarbet Welch. She was united in marriage to Daniel Edwin Hughes on June 26, 1935. He preceded her in death on June 8, 1996.

Mrs. Hughes was retired as a bookkeeper for D. J. Hughes Store and was a current member of the First United Methodist Church. She was also a member of many organizations including the Wesleyan Circle and teacher of the Primary Class. Later she was a member of the Wesleyan Sunday School Class and Woman’s Society of Christian Service. She was past president of the Savannah Book Club and past president of City Elementary PTA. She was also on the Library Board of the Shiloh Region and the Hardin County Library Board. She was a counselor of the Girl Scouts, and a member of the Shiloh Park Beautification Committee. Margueritte was also employed at the Hardin County Schools as a teacher and the U. S. Post Office in Savannah, Tennessee as a postal clerk.

She received the Woman of Achievement award in 1956. She enjoyed playing golf with friends and her late husband, and enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of two bridge clubs in Savannah. She loved cooking for her family and taking her favorite dishes to sick friends and bereavement meals.

She is survived by her daughter, Becky Hughes Kerr and her husband, Jim of Savannah, Tennessee; grandchild, Steven Kerr and his wife, Mary Gordon Kerr of Charleston, South Carolina; and great grandchildren, Harrison, Will, and Molly Kerr.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Con T. Welch.
