Funeral service for Margie Lee Ligon Sanderson, age 84, of Decatur, will be Sunday, June 29, 2014, 3:00 p.m. at Shelton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Benny Sivley officiating. The family will receive friends for two hours prior to service. Interment will be in Roselawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Sanderson, who died Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Decatur Health & Rehabilitation, was born October 5, 1929, in Lawrence County to Howard and Callie Ligon. She was preceded in death by her husband, Larkin Henry Sanderson, one son, Steve Sanderson, her parents, two brothers, J. C. Ligon and F. D. Ligon, and one sister, Margaret Ann Patton.

At the young age of 13, she began to work for cousin, Travis Letson, at the Farmer’s Cafe in Decatur. She met and married Larkin Sanderson in 1953. They had four children, and although she never worked outside the home again, she worked non-stop in her home for her husband and family. Next to God, her family was the most important part of her life. She made many children, along with her own, happy with her efforts of driving them to school field trips, being a chaperone on church trips to the zoo and Kiddie Land, leading Brownies, Girl Scouts, and Cub Scouts when her children were younger, and being the “fortune teller” at Gordon-Bibb Elementary School Halloween festival. Probably the greatest impact she had was transporting many children to church and vacation Bible school, where many gave their hearts to Jesus. She and her husband were the leaders in the “Primary” department at Fairview Baptist Church in Decatur for 35 years. Her favorite holiday was Christmas with lots of decorations! She worked tirelessly for others, but in her later years, she did finally slow down a bit, and allow her family to give back by caring for her, and spoiling her as she SO deserved. She will be greatly missed.

She is survived by one son, Mark A. Sanderson of Decatur; two daughters, Lisa Pensworth (Bill), and Sarah Owczarzak (Tom), both of Decatur; one daughter-in-law, Mary Sanderson; seven grandchildren, Rachel Crow, Wesley Crow (Maddie), Katie Crow, Lowell Sanderson, Luke Sanderson, Shelley Pensworth, Matt Pensworth; and two great-grandchildren, Harris Crow, and Camper Pensworth.

Pallbearers will be family and friends.

The family would like to offer their special thanks to those who cared for her at Decatur Health and Rehab, and to her physician, Dr. Bill Whitley, who took great care for her many years.
