Margaret Lynn Garrett Chaney, 74, departed this life from the Franks Green House at United Methodist Senior Services on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 after battling heart and kidney disease. Margaret was born on October 16, l948 in Tupelo to the late John W. and Pearl Barnes Garrett. The Garrett families were pioneers in the Shannon/Old Union area of Lee County. She graduated from Shannon High School. On July 27, l964, she married her soul mate, Jimmy Wayne Chaney, a marriage of 57 years until his death on Dec. 31, 2020. Margaret worked as a convenience store clerk several years before becoming a full time housewife and homemaker. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Margaret enjoyed sewing and crafts. Her favorite thing to do with her grandchildren was to take them to Lake Tiak-O’Kata in Louisville where they always enjoyed fishing and swimming. She devoted her life to her family. Jimmy and Margaret were longtime members of the Temple Grove Baptist Church.

A service celebrating her life will take place at 2 PM Saturday, August 26, 2023 in the Sadie Holland Memorial Chapel at Holland Funeral Directors-Tupelo with Bro. Don Baggett officiating. Private burial will follow in Old Union Cemetery west of Shannon. Visitation will be from Noon-service time on Saturday.

Margaret is survived by her daughter, Toni Chaney Baswell (Shayne) of Plantersville and Jerry “Bubba” Chaney (Dorthy) of Nettleton; her grandchildren, Jonathan Skelton (Kayela), Ashley Rawson (Scott), Amanda McCormick (Zack), Amber Baswell, Dalton Chaney, Kaitlyn Chaney, Destiny Chaney (Morgan), Bryan Chaney and Brandi Holland (Tony); 21 great grandchildren; her siblings, Linda McCullough, Dan Garrett and Richard Garrett. She was preceded in death by husband, Jimmy; parents, John and Pearl Garrett; sons, Anthony Chaney and Philip “Tinker” Chaney and a brother, Butch Garrett.

Pallbearers are Zack McCormick, Richard Garrett, Rodney Chaney, Matt McCaine and Steve Holland.
