Margaret Grubb Fleming – Obituary

Margaret Grubb Fleming age 102 of Florence, died on July 5, in Birmingham Alabama after a short illness. The family will receive friends at First Presbyterian Church at 1:00 pm until 2:45 pm on Saturday, July 9 with the memorial service following at 3:00 pm.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Julius D. Fleming.

She is survived by one daughter, Julia Ann Fleming of Birmingham; two sons, Glenn Hamilton Fleming of Knoxville, Tennessee, and Robert Grubb Fleming of Brunswick, Georgia; three granddaughters, Charlotte Fleming Lawless of Denver, Colorado, Rachel Suzanne Fleming of Denver and Natalie Fleming Bond of Wiley, Colorado; a nephew, Richard Finley Robbins of Columbia, South Carolina; and two great grandsons, Rhody James Bond of Wiley, Colorado and Blake Davis Lawless of Denver, Colorado. She also leaves a niece and nephew by marriage, Fennell Jackson Fleming of Due West, South Carolina and Barbara Fleming Twaddell of Williamsburg, Virginia.

She was born in Riceville, Tennessee on February 8, 1914, to the late William Hamilton and Margaret Ann Montgomery Grubb.

Mrs. Fleming graduated from Carson Newman College in Tennessee with a BS in Food Chemistry. She began her work life teaching Chemistry and Senior English at McMinn County High School in Tennessee. She moved to Florence in 1942 to become a research scientist at the Phosphate Lab at TVA from 1942 to 1945. Her second career was as a wife and mother. In later years, Mrs. Fleming re-entered the education field teaching second grade at Gilbert School for 15 years.

As a member of First Presbyterian Church of Florence since 1945, Mrs. Fleming was always active in Women of the Church, including as Church Historian and Kitchen Committee Chair.

The family wishes to express its sincere appreciation to the staffs at Merrill Gardens in Florence and at St. Martins-in-the-Pines in Birmingham; and to thank to two special caregivers, Marie Ghrisby and Juanita Holland of the Shoals area.

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church’s music program or to a nonprofit of your choice.
