Marcia Cunningham Houchens – Obituary

Marcia Cunningham Houchens, 81 years old of Huntsville, Alabama died peacefully at home on Monday, surrounded by her family.

Marcia was born and raised in Rochester, New York. She married Bill Cunningham in 1951 and they moved to Huntsville, Alabama in 1958 for his job at Redstone Arsenal. Marcia worked for many years with the Huntsville City Schools in various capacities. Bill died in 1973. Marcia married Rich Houchens in June of 1975, who also lost his wife in 1973.
Rich and Marcia shared an interest in antiques and opened Marcia’s Antiques on Whitesburg Drive in 1980. They traveled together and participated in antique shows throughout the south.

Marcia was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur Carroll and Thelma Fitts Carroll, and sisters Betty Rosenberg and Donna Goakes. She is survived by her husband and was the loving mother of Mike (Cindy) Cunningham, Joy (William) Barnes and Jim (Karen) Cunningham. Some of Marcia’s biggest gifts in life were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren are Courtney (Brooks) Lynch, Cara Cunningham, Katie (Clint) Baggett, Aaron (Whitney) Cunningham, Camille Cunningham, Natalie Barnes, Rachel (Joey) Hunt, Matt Barnes, James Cunningham and Chris Barnes. Her great-grandchildren are Emma Cunningham, Isaac Lynch, Olivia Lynch, Evan Lynch, Aliyah Prempeh, Gracen Baggett, Chloe Cunningham, Vivian Baggett and Isabelle Hunt.

Visitation will be from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 16th at Laughlin Service Funeral Home. Graveside service will follow at 2:00 at Maple Hill Cemetery and be conducted by Rev. Frank Broyles. Pallbearers are Aaron Cunningham, James Cunningham, Matt Barnes, Chris Barnes, Brooks Lynch, Clint Baggett, Joey Hunt and John Stewart.
