DECATUR-A man dies in Custody at the Decatur City Jail.   Here is how the Decatur Police Department describes the events leading up to the death:

“On March 30, 2014 at approximately 2:00 am, officers of the Decatur Police Department responded to Geno’s Pub, located at 1015 6th Ave. SE, in reference to a reported fight in the parking lot. Upon arrival, the officers made contact with a woman lying in the parking lot. Upon speaking with the woman, as well as bystanders, the officers determined that the woman was intoxicated. Once the woman got to her feet, she began cursing and swinging her fists at the people around her. Officers attempted to place the woman under arrest for Public Intoxication but her father, Marty Earl Whisman who was also present and intoxicated, attempted to intervene and prevent the officers from arresting her. Both Whisman and his daughter were arrested and charged with Public Intoxication. Whisman was also charged with resisting his daughter’s arrest. Both were transported to the Decatur City jail and booked without incident.
At approximately 5:00am, Corrections Officers served breakfast. Whisman did not get up to take a tray. Corrections Officers entered the cell and found Whisman lying on his mat, unresponsive. The officers immediately began CPR and called for assistance. Decatur Fire / Rescue and First Response Ambulance arrived and transported Whisman to Decatur Morgan Hospital. Despite the efforts of Emergency Room personnel, Whisman was pronounced dead. According to relatives, Whisman had a history of heart problems and suffered a heart attack in 2012.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigation has been called and will be reviewing the incident. An autopsy will be performed by the Alabama Department of Forensic Science.”
