ATHENS-Athens Police Arrested a suspect on Thursday, November 5.  Here is a statement from Police Chief Floyd Johnson regarding the arrest:

Thursday morning Athens police arrested a person suspected of breaking into 3 storage buildings in the Jackson Drive area and taking various items. Homeowners in that area should check their property for any signs of a break in or theft. To report a crime, call APD at 256-233-8700.

“This morning the police department received a call of a suspicious person walking on Jackson Drive carrying a tool box, a briefcase and a bottle of Roundup. Sgt. Dusty Meadows located the man and identified him as Barry Ray Wooley. Wooley told Meadows he was going to a friend’s residence to do some work but the friend wasn’t home. He told Meadows he bought the property last night from Lowe’s. Wooley also had a set of bolt cutters that didn’t look new. When other officers arrived Sgt. Meadows started looking in the area at houses and storage sheds. Sgt. Meadows located 3 different storage sheds that Wooley had been in and one residence that had a screen removed from a window and fresh shoe prints on the door. The owner of one of the storage sheds told officers he was missing a hedge trimmer, weed eater and a green 100 foot extension cord. Officers have not located any of that property at this time. Wooley was charged with 3 counts of burglary 3rd degree, one count of attempted burglary 3rd degree and one count of possession of burglary tools. Due to this all occurring this morning I expect we may have other victims over the next several days. The investigation into these cases will continue. Wooley was booked at the police department and transferred to the county jail.”
