MADISON-The Madison Police Department would like to inform citizens of a criminal telephone scam from callers claiming to be Law Enforcement. We have received reports that this has occurred in our community. The telephone number on the caller I.D. is sometimes falsely set by the criminals to match a legitimate agency. The caller will inform the victim that they have a warrant for their arrest and must send money to avoid arrest. They will then direct the victim to send money via a pre-paid card, commonly referred to as a Green Dot or Money Pak purchased at a store, OR, by wiring money through Western Union or Money Gram.
Keep in mind that Law Enforcement will NOT call you requesting you send money to avoid arrest. DO NOT wire money from your bank or through Western Union or Money Gram without first verifying who is receiving the money and why. Also do not give someone the number from a Green Dot or Money Pak card without verifying their identity and that they are who they say they are. For more information on this and other scams, please visit our website at www.madisonal.gov and enter “scam” into the search bar on the left.
