Madison Elonzo Dodson, former longtime resident of South High Street in Columbia, died at the age of 93 at Morning Pointe.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday June 7, 2023 at 11:00 A.M. at First United Methodist Church, 222 West Seventh Street, Columbia with Rev. Lee Stevenson officiating. Burial will follow in Santa Fe Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 10:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. at the church. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements.

Born June 19, 1929 in the Santa Fe Community of Maury County, he was the son of the late N. Roy Dodson and the late Janie Grace Sowell Dodson. As a young child growing up on the family farm, he loved to ride his ponies. He was a graduate of Santa Fe High School class of 1947, where he lettered in basketball all four years. He was also a graduate of Columbia Business College and attended Columbia State Community College. Mr. Dodson served two years at Fort Carson, Colorado Springs, Colorado in the U. S. Army. He was a thirty-year employee of Union Carbide and worked seventeen years with Spontex, Inc. He had served as Scout Master for a Boy Scout group and enjoyed fishing. Mr. Dodson also enjoyed watching Duke basketball, wrestling and western movies on television. He had a great love for antiques and had been a collector for more than sixty-five years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Columbia for over sixty years, where he rarely missed a Sunday service and was involved with The People’s Table. Above all, he cherished time spent with his family.
Survivors include his son, Jerry Madison (Susan) Dodson of Columbia; grandchildren, Julie Elisabeth Dodson (Andrew) Ackley of Columbia and Steven Erwin (Kalah) Dodson of Neapolis; great grandchildren, Luke Andrew Ackley, Lillian Grace Ackley, Levi James Ackley and Madison Deann Dodson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Hazel Erwin Dodson in 1974; daughter, Mary Jacqueline Dodson in 2021; brother and sister-in-law, Harold & Marjorie Dodson; sisters and brothers-in-law, Madge & Paul Alderson, Edith & Fred Church, Faye & Ray Locke; and nephew, Charles Roy Dodson.
Active pallbearers will be Steven Dodson, Andrew Ackley, Harold Malugin, Norris Alderson, David Alderson, Joel Locke, and Mike Richardson. Honorary pallbearers will include Elizabeth Sowell, Colleen Hargrove, Connie & Steve Thomason, Tyler Sneed and the staff of Morning Pointe, and members of the Bruce Strother Fellowship Sunday School at First United Methodist Church.
