Madison County Sheriff’s Office Investigating Inmate Death

MADISON COUNTY-At approximately 10:30 p.m. yesterday, a Madison County jail facility inmate was found deceased in his cell.
Coryell Derrick, 45, was housed in a single cell in the jail infirmary. At some point before 10:30 p.m., Mr. Derrick suffered a sudden medical emergency, which proved fatal. HEMSI responded to the main facility and was unable to revive Mr. Derrick. Sheriff’s detectives responded to the detention facility and conducted a preliminary death investigation. There are no indications of foul play or other suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
Mr. Derrick was booked into the Madison County Detention Facility in July of 2023, where he was to face Probation Violation charges and traffic offenses. The University of Alabama in Birmingham will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of Mr. Derrick’s death. Mr. Derrick’s family members have been notified of his death. The investigation is ongoing.
Sheriff Kevin Turner states, “An in-custody death is always difficult for everyone involved: facility staff members, medical staff, and emergency first responders. We are extremely saddened to report the death of Mr. Derrick and send our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”
Any further details will be released by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office Public Affairs Office. No additional information is available for release at this time.
