Mr. Lynn Michael “Mike” Black, 77, died Saturday, October 28, 2023 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi. He was a native and lifelong resident of Tupelo. He worked with his father in the family business, Black’s Department Store. Mike was initially an active member of St. Luke United Methodist Church and later was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Tupelo with his wife, Betty Latimer Black. Mike graduated from Tupelo High School. While a high school student, Mike was active in Boy Scouts and achieved the Eagle Scout rank. He graduated from Mississippi State University with a degree in business. While attending school, he continued to work alongside his father in the department store. Mike was a friend to all who knew him. He always had a good story to tell.
Survivors include his sister, Ellen Black Morgan (Tom) of Oakland, TN; brother-in-law, LTC(R) John Latimer, Jr. (Kathy) of Harvest, AL; nephew, John Latimer, III (Sarah); niece, Sara Latimer Brown (Stuart), and four grandnieces and grandnephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, and his parents, Felix and Ruth Hussey Black.
The family requests that memorial gifts/offerings be made to either the First Presbyterian Church, 400 Jefferson Street, P.O. Box 1725, Tupelo, MS 38863, or to the Mississippi State University Foundation, P.O. Box 6149, Mississippi State, MS 39762.
Visitation will be held from 2 PM – 3 PM, Sunday, November 5, 2023 at First Presbyterian Church in McFadden Hall, with a Commitment/Memorial Service to follow at the First Presbyterian Church Columbarium in Stuart Gardens in Tupelo.
