Lynda Wilson Van Devender: A Legacy of Education and Compassion
It is with great sorrow and loving remembrance that we announce the passing of Lynda Wilson Van Devender on January 2, 2024. A beloved mother, cherished educator, and friend to all. Lynda’s radiant smile and quick wit brought light and warmth into the lives of everyone she met.
Born amidst the Smokey Mountains of Northeast Georgia, Lynda’s life journey took her to communities in South Georgia, East Texas, and eventually Northwest Alabama. Her 26-year-long career as an elementary school teacher in East Texas and Sheffield, Alabama, was marked by a deep commitment to nurturing young minds. Further extending her passion for teaching, Lynda also touched the lives of many adults at Northwest Shoals Community College, guiding them towards obtaining their GED. Her impact on her students was profound, inspiring countless adults to reach new heights in their education and personal lives. They often recognized her in public, eager to express gratitude for the difference she made in their lives.
Lynda’s ability to connect with people was extraordinary, often turning strangers into lifelong friends and pen pals through simple conversations in everyday places. This gift of connection was a hallmark of her personality, drawing people towards her with her warmth and genuine interest in their stories. Her life was rich with passions, including her love for animals, singing in the church choir, and bursting into song at any given moment. These joys were reflections of her vibrant spirit and generous heart.
As we remember Lynda, we honor a life filled with love, laughter, and a dedication to enriching the lives of others. Her legacy lives on in the countless hearts she touched.
Preceded in death by her husband, The Reverend Charles E. Van Devender, Jr., Lynda’s legacy is carried on by her loving sons, Charles (Candice), Ladd (Michel), Drew (Kristen), and Bryan (Elizabeth); her cherished ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family invites friends and loved ones to join in celebrating Lynda’s life at her memorial visitation, to be held at Greenview Memorial Park & Funeral Home in Florence, Alabama. The visitation will take place on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, from 11am to 1pm, followed by a service and graveside at 1pm.
