Lyldon Eugene Strickland, 91 of Huntsville, Alabama passed away on Thursday, July 13, 2023. He was born October 26, 1931, to Eugene and Viola Strickland in Clay County, Alabama. He graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Pharmacy in 1954 and received his degree in Dentistry from the University of Alabama in Birmingham in 1958. After dental school, Lyldon served as a Captain in the Air Force stationed at Rhein-Main Air Force Base in Frankfurt, Germany. He could not be without the love of his life, so he sent for Martha Jean Bailey, and they married. After the completion of his military service, they settled in Huntsville, Alabama in 1961.

 

He practiced dentistry for over 50 years. Lyldon served as President of the Alabama Academy of General Dentistry in 1979 and was awarded the 2011 Alabama Academy of General Dentistry Dentist of the Year. He was President of the Alabama Dental Association in 1985 and served as a delegate to the American Dental Association for 16 years. He also served as President of the University of Alabama School of Dentistry Alumni Association. He received the award of the Distinguished Alumnus of the University of Alabama School of Dentistry in 2016. Lyldon was a fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He was a longstanding member of Huntsville Rotary Club and received the Russell Barber Fellow Award from that organization. He was an active member of Twickenham Church of Christ and was involved in many civic organizations such as the local PTA, Scouts, and Sports Booster Clubs.

Lyldon was preceded in death by the love of 64 years of marriage, Martha Jean Strickland, his brother, Chalmus William Strickland, and his parents.

He leaves behind his sister, Gwynn Strickland Bates “Buddy”; brother, Joe Charles Strickland (Gail); and children, Anne Bailey Strickland, Gregory Eugene Strickland (Margaret) and Stacey Strickland Gardner (Steve). “Dada” loved and spoiled his four grandchildren, Bailey and Maggie Gardner and David and Park Strickland.

A special thank you to his wonderful caregivers, Yvonne, Lorenza, Laverne, Sara, Kim, and Tawanna for all the love and support they have provided to our family.

Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday July 23, 2023, at Twickenham Church of Christ, followed by a celebration of life at 3 p.m.
