Luther R. (Jack) Irons, age 78, of Sheffield, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2013.
Visitation will be Wednesday, April 3, at noon at Colbert Memorial Chapel. A memorial service will follow at 1 p.m. Interment will be in the cemetery at Canaan United Methodist Church in Lauderdale County.
Luther was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Ollie Irons; two sisters, Katherine Fisher and Lucille Pate; four brothers, James Irons, William Irons, John (J.T.) Irons and Homer Irons; and a host of nieces; and nephews.
Luther (Jack) Irons grew up in Spring Valley. He worked as a jury consultant, investigator and advisor to attorneys, politicians and every day people. He also worked on Governor George Wallace’s campaigns. Luther was traveling with the governor in May of 1972 on the Presidential campaign trail when Governor Wallace was shot.
Many candidates, public officials, attorneys, businessmen and citizens have attended Luther’s annual Labor Day breakfasts since the event began in 1993. The breakfasts were always filled to capacity and were attended by Republicans and Democrats, as well as people of all races and religious affiliations. It took a man of Luther’s stature to bring people out at 6 a.m. on Labor Day. It was often observed that, if you were running for office, an invitation to Luther’s Labor Day breakfast was a must.
Luther had a long history in national, state and local politics and was still involved up to the day of his death. He spoke often about the importance of getting people to vote. Luther took a great deal of pride in the progress made in civil rights in Alabama. He continued to work very hard to advance the causes in which he believed until his passing.
Special thanks are offered to the staff of the emergency room at Helen Keller Hospital, as well as the nurses and staff on the 3rd and 4th floors, Dr. Flora Kayfan and staff, the doctors and staff at Shoals Kidney and Hypertension Clinic and Dr. Randy Little and Dr. Jerry Williams and staff. Special gratitude is given to the around the clock caregivers who took care of Luther’s needs for the past three years.
Pallbearers will be Robert Bunch, Keith Medley, Billy Underwood, Emmitt Jimmar, William Hovater, Kenneth Ricks, Jerry White and Steve Aldridge.
Honorary pallbearers are all the public servants, political office holders and members of the legal community who worked with Luther over the last 60 years.
