Mrs. Lucille Hammonds Langford, affectionately known as “Mama Lucy”, was born February 15, 1930 to the late Jimmy and Gracie Crawford Green. She answered the Master’s call on June 1, 2023.
Mrs. Lucille was united in holy matrimony to the late Mr. John Hammond. They wed at a very young age and they resided on Chase Nursery for many years raising their children. Later in life Mrs. Lucille remarried and formed a union with Mr. Johnny Langford.
As a youngster, Mrs. Langford gave her life to Christ at the St. Mark P.B. Church. Later on, she moved her membership and joined St. Bartley P.B. Church under the leadership of the late Elder Dr. William T. Gladys. There she was a faithful member until her health failed.
Mrs. Lucille was preceded in death by children, Mr. John Lee Hammonds, Mr. James Hammonds, Ms. Loretta Hammonds and Mrs. Annie L. Briggs; sisters, Mrs. Odell Smith, Mrs. Fannie M. Erskine, Mrs. Charlesetta Green; and brother, Mr. Jimmie Green.
Mrs. Lucille worked for many years as a cook. She retired in the position of head cook from the El Mexicana Mexican Restaurant. She enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family. At any given time her home was welcome for anyone to come by and catch up on what you had been doing. If you didn’t come by you could call and Mrs. Lucille would talk very slow. In addition, every year she would look forward to the Chase Reunion where she could catch up with all her extended Chase family, children and all. Besides catching up with family one of her favorite hobbies was playing bingo. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She will be truly missed.
Precious memories of Lucille are left with her children: Mrs. Ernestine (Donald) Richmond, Ms. Patricia (James) Patton, Mr. Robert (Serena) Hammonds of Texas, and Mr. Billy Ray Hammonds; step-children, Mrs. Lula (Dorsey) Ford and Mr. Johnny Hammonds; step-brother, Tommy L. Green, sister-in-law, Mrs. Addie Green; thirty grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.
