Lowery Irvin Tackett, 93, passed away Saturday, February 17, 2024, at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. He was born April 25, 1930, to Oscar Lee Tackett and Erin “Era” Irene Horton Tackett.
Following his 1949 graduation from Moorville High School, Lowery enlisted in the US Army, he was a Korean War veteran. He married the love of his life Glema “June” Umfress Tackett on July 3, 1952, and they shared 56 years before her death on January 28, 2009. During the beginning years of marriage, they owned and operated Skyline Beauty Shop. Lowery continued his education taking night classes while working days at Daybrite. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1960 from Mississippi State University.
Lowery retired after 18 years of teaching at Mississippi Rehabilitation Center. Never one to stay idle, after retiring, Lowery joined the staff at Home Depot, becoming a cherished figure known for greeting everyone as “neighbor” or “friend.”
He was an avid lover of horses, music, and gardening, he maintained a vegetable garden for 48 consecutive years. His green thumb extended to livestock, raising cattle for 36 years. Lowery was a devoted member of First Baptist Church Tupelo for 69 years. Most recently he attended Boguefala Baptist Church in Mooreville.
Lowery leaves behind one daughter, Joyce Tackett Dozier of Tupelo; five grandchildren, Zachary Dozier, April Cardenas, Josh Tackett, Jacob Tackett, and Jonathan Tackett; several great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; and three special “angels”, Mary Ann Tackett Hall (Jimmy); Sharon Copeland (Bobby), and Joanna Williams (Bruce).
Along with his wife and parents he was preceded in death by his son, Randy Dean Tackett; three brothers, Jessie Lee Tackett, Jerry Duane Tackett, Robert “Bob” Earnest Tackett; and one sister, Mary Francis Tackett.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at Pegues, Tupelo.
Services honoring his life will be 12 p.m. Wednesday, February 21, 2024, at the Jefferson Street Chapel of Pegues Funeral Directors with Rev. Ricky Pierce and Minister Robert Ellis officiating. Burial will follow at Gilvo Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Juan Hernandez, Brock Satterwhite, Josh Lesley, Bruce Williams, Bobby Copeland, and Zachary Dozier.
