Lorenzo Cowan, Sr. (also affectionately known as “Lo”) was born November 17, 1944 in Madison, Alabama to the late J.D. Cowan and Needa Mae Fitchard Cowan (“Mommae”). Lo accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior at an early age and became a member of Springhill United Methodist Church in Madison, AL. Lo was called home on October 13, 2024.
Lo received his early education in Madison, AL and graduated high school from Council Training High School. Upon graduating high school, Lo joined the Air Force and was honorably discharged after serving four and one-half years; he served during the Vietnam War. He then served another four years as a reserve while working at Dunlop Tire Company in Madison, AL. Lo retired from Dunlop after being employed there for 33 years.
Lo enjoyed working around his house, helping friends and family fix things and spending time with his only grandchild who he affectionately nicknamed his “Floo Floo”. He had a natural knack for fixing things. He could figure out how to fix something without knowing how it worked. He was always the first person family members would call when something needed to be fixed. You could tell him the problem over the phone and without him even seeing it, he could tell you how to fix it. He also had a hidden talent for singing and he enjoyed spending time in his garage while visiting with friends and family.
Lo will be sorely missed. He is preceded in death by his father, J.D. Cowan; mother, Needa Mae Cowan; brothers: baby Lawrence Cowan, J.D. Cowan, Jr. (Juke), Booker T. Cowan, James Cowan (late sister-n-law Queenie Cowan); and sister, Doris Washington (late brother-n-law Willie Joe Washington).
He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters: Delphine Cowan and Chantaye Cowan; son, Lorenzo Cowan, Jr.; granddaughter, De’Asia Carson; sister, Phyllis Cowan; brother, Ernest Cowan (Jackie); sister-n-law, Daisy Cowan; very dear friend and caregiver, Elex Jones; friend and caregiver, Barbara Mason; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Funeral service will be 12:00 noon, Friday, October 18, 2024 at the Royal Chapel of Memories (4315 Oakwood Avenue NW Huntsville, AL 35810) with Pastor Dennis Jones officiating. Interment will be in the Arnett Cemetery.
