Lorene Curtis, of Double Springs, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2024 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
Lorene was born February 13, 1927, in Double Springs, Alabama to James and Nervie Pulliam. She graduated from Winston County High School and eventually married her high school sweetheart, Eldon R. Curtis, on September 10, 1949. Prior to her marriage Lorene worked in Birmingham, Alabama at a financial institution. After her marriage, Eldon’s army reserve unit was soon activated, and they moved first to Cape Cod, MA where she later shared many stories about their adventures. They were later transferred to California where they stayed for a short period of time. Afterwards, Lorene and Eldon decided to move back to Double Springs, their home. Lorene worked at a few different jobs in Double Springs but eventually became the Office Manager/Bookkeeper in the Tax Collectors Office in Winston County. This job allowed her to meet just about everyone in Winston County. She loved meeting, helping and talking with people.
After 30+ years in the Winston County Courthouse, Lorene retired and enjoyed her life of gardening, embroidery, reading, and socializing with friends. She also enjoyed spending time with her only daughter, Cathy, and her family. Cathy encouraged her parents to travel with her and her family. She and Eldon did a few bus trips, trips with friends, a trip to Hawaii and a 50th Anniversary cruise to Alaska with Cathy. One of Lorene’s favorite trips was after Eldon passed away, when she and Cathy took a trip to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. There were many other trips with Cathy, Curt and Christofer to Disney World, the beach, cruises and the mountains, her favorite spot. She enjoyed being a part of Cathy’s family, supporting them, and the activities that Christofer, her very special grandson, was involved in. However, being at home in Double Springs was her favorite place to be. She was always active in her church, Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. She especially loved the social gatherings and lunch with her friends after Church. Lorene made some beautiful embroidery gifts for many individuals: her last piece was a beautiful tablecloth for Cathy. Many in the community have received beautiful pieces throughout the years. Lorene was also an excellent cook and loved to cook for her family, Church socials, and her friends. Above all these things, Lorene’s greatest treasure was her family. Her legacy will continue to live on in the lives of her daughter Cathy, son-in-law Curt, grandson Christofer and all those lucky enough to call her Aunt Lorene or just a friend.
Services will be held at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Double Springs, Alabama. Family will receive friends Wednesday, July 31, 2024, from 12:00p.m. until service time at 2:00p.m. in the sanctuary. Dennis Steward and Jeff Wiggins will officiate.
Lorene is survived by her daughter, Cathy Curtis Miller, son-in-law, William Curtis Miller; and grandson, Christofer Curtis Miller. She is also survived by a special nephew, Greg Batchelor, his wife Donna, their daughters, Andrea (Josh), Haley, and granddaughters, Regan and Lila, who have shown incredible love through the years to Aunt Lorene. Other nieces and nephews include; Lisa Claytor (Bruce), Cynthia Tyra (Scott), Sandra Kee, Sonya O’Dell (John), Michael Barnett (Melanie), Billy Curtis (Linda) and Ricky Curtis.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eldon R. Curtis; her parents, James and Nervie Pulliam; and a special sister, Jessie Pulliam.
The family would like to thank Dr. Andrea Batchelor for her love and care of “Aunt Lorene” and her amazing caregiver Carole Brown.
