Lloyd Herman Kranert of Huntsville passed away on November 11. Lloyd was born in Des Moines, Iowa on July 21, 1925 to Leroy and Florence Kranert. He spent his school years in Montgomery, Alabama, graduating from Sidney Lanier High School. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1943 and was training to be a bombardier/navigator when World War II ended. He remained in the reserves for 14 years. Lloyd graduated from Auburn with a degree in architecture, and began his practice in Huntsville in 1953. His work included residential and commercial projects; he designed many churches, schools and manufacturing plants in Huntsville and in several other states and countries.
Lloyd is survived by his wife of 19 years, Jan Martin McMahan Kranert; two daughters, Karen Kranert Creque of Shelbyville, KY, and Karoline Kranert Webster (Bill) of Harvest, AL; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Corrine Inglis of Birmingham, AL; two stepsons, Kevin McMahan (Tammy) and Steven McMahan (Donna); three nephews; and one niece. Lloyd was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Jule Browder Kranert, and daughter, Kris Kranert Broom.
As a member of the American Institute of Architecture Lloyd served in every local and state AIA leadership position. He won more than a dozen design awards at local, state and regional levels. As a charter member of The AIA local chapter (1965), Lloyd served with distinction in virtually every elective office. He was a member of the Construction Specifications Institute and raised scholarship money for the organization by hosting golf tournaments. He was a long-time member of Rotary Club International. Lloyd was a charter member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
Lloyd was passionate about the game of golf. Self-taught, he played on the Air Force travel team and started the golf team at Auburn University. As a member of the AIA/RIBA International Golfing Society, he played the premier courses in the U.S. and United Kingdom, winning the trophy three times.
Visitation will be from 12 noon to 2 p.m. Thursday, November 15 at Trinity United Methodist Church. A celebration of life service will follow at 2 with the Rev. Mac Buttram officiating. Memorials may be made to the church.
