HUNTSVILLE – North Alabama’s largest 5K race is going virtual for 2020. The annual Liz Hurley Ribbon Run 5K has boasted a sell-out crowd of 6,500 runners in recent years, and now anyone can safely participate from their neighborhood, favorite trail or a treadmill thanks to the new format.

Here’s how it will work:

  • Residents can join as an individual or form a team and fundraise via their own personal fundraising page.
  • Participants will choose a day between September 28 and October 15 to run their personal race.
  • They can choose their own route, use a stopwatch or fitness tracker to time the run, and log final results through the race site.
  • On Saturday, October 17, top finishers will be announced live on Huntsville Hospital Foundation’s Facebook page.

The event benefits the Liz Hurley Breast Cancer Fund at Huntsville Hospital Foundation, and will provide cutting-edge ultrasound equipment for not-for-profit Huntsville Hospital Breast Center. The additional high-resolution breast ultrasound unit will help to accommodate the steadily increasing volume and complexity of cases managed at the breast center, which remains the largest in Alabama.

“Our event may look different this year, but one thing hasn’t changed: patients at the Huntsville Hospital Breast Center still need our help,” said Sonia Robinson, 2020 Ribbon Run co-chairman and breast cancer survivor. “We are counting on you to run with Liz, no matter where you are! Every dollar raised stays local, helping countless women in our community and region. When you register for this race, you are helping us toward the goal of making every breast cancer patient a survivor.”

Registration is now open. For more information or to register, please visit lizhurleyribbonrun.org.

The Foundation encourages runners to send selfies and videos of their route. Tag @huntsvillehospitalfoundation and use the hashtag #runwithLiz so to share where the Ribbon Run is taking you this year.
