Mrs. Swearingen was born July 31, 1949 in Union County to the late Buck and Thea Parks Watts. She attended West Union High School until the 11th grade, before transferring to Lafayette High School were she graduated in 1967. After graduation she continued her education receiving her business degree from Northwest Community College and her Bachelors in Art and Education from the University of Mississippi. She then married her beloved husband, Robert Van Swearingen who survives. Together they lived and raised a family in Union County, were Mrs. Swearingen was a valued employee of Bell South working as an engineer for thirty three years before her retirement.
A Christian and member of Macedonia Baptist Church, Mrs. Swearingen was a prime example of what a virtuous woman is. She was a hard worker and dedicated her time to volunteering at Baptist Memorial Hospital, New Albany Library, and Camp Blue Bird. You never saw Mrs. Swearingen without a smile on her face as, she always looked at the brighter side of any situation. Her favorite pastimes included singing with the “Gospel Airs” and tending to her flower gardens. She had a true love for people and an even greater love for animals, especially cats. Her true passion came from caring for her family and being the best “MiMi” to her much adored grandchildren. Mrs. Swearingen’s sweet personality, sunny disposition, and selflessness will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.
