Linda Frances Squires Mixon, 84, of Cleburne, TX, passed away June 24, 2024. She was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Bonnie Ruth LeDaum and W. D. Squires. She studied music and Romance Languages at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon), and upon graduation, moved to Washington DC, where she met and married W.R. “Bob” Mixon, Jr. in 1969. The newlyweds made their home in Huntsville.
Linda’s interest in music, especially classical and sacred music, led her to a career as a choir director for St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, handbells at Grace Lutheran Church, and the Huntsville Music Study Club. A lifelong supporter of the arts, Linda volunteered for many years with the Friends of the Library, helped establish the local Public Radio station, and sang in both the Huntsville Community Chorus and with Ars Nova. For several years, Linda taught music appreciation to elementary school students, introducing them to various genres and providing them with hands-on experience with musical instruments.
Her deep faith in God and involvement in the Episcopal Church led to her to participate in Cursillo and Ultreya, Daughters of the King, diocesan and church-wide music and liturgical development, as well as Education for Ministry (EfM), becoming a mentor for others pursuing theological education. She encouraged many in their learning pursuits, providing financial support to numerous students and seminarians. She loved her family and friends, travel, cooking, baseball, and had a fantastic sense of humor.
She is survived by her daughter, Rev. Dr. Bonnie Mixon McCrickard; son-in-law, Dr. Matthew McCrickard, both of Granbury, Texas; her brother, Will Squires, Jr.; and sister-in-law, Judy McCall. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 50 years.
Visitation will be held at Laughlin Service Funeral Home in Huntsville on Tuesday, July 2 from 4:00 – 6:00pm. The funeral will be Wednesday, July 3 at 11:00am at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 12200 Bailey Cove Road in Huntsville, with interment at Cullman City Cemetery to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to your local Public Radio station; the Huntsville Friends of the Library; or Education for Ministry at the University of the South, Sewanee.
