Lilbourne P. Hall, 93, passed away on Sunday, April 26, 2015, at his home. Visitation will be from 5 to 7p.m. on Wednesday at Elkins Funeral Home, 1535 Hermitage Dr., Florence, AL 35630. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Elkins with the Rev. Henry Melton officiating.
Lilbourne grew up in Oakland, Alabama. He served in the U.S. Army and attended UNA, Peabody, and Vanderbilt universities, earning graduate degrees in chemistry, physics, biology, and math. He married Helen Mattox in 1949, and the couple raised four children and shared many happy years together until Helen’s death in 1978. Lilbourne never remarried.
Early in his career, Lilbourne was a high school and college teacher and then worked for four years as a professional Boy Scout executive. Lilbourne spent the rest of his career of over 60 years as a personal insurance salesman serving thousands of clients who became dear friends. He became one of the most respected life insurance agents in the Southeast as well as one the industry’s leading salesmen. He was an award-winning member of the Million Dollar Round Table for decades. The Lil Hall Agency, which he owned until his death, still serves several hundred clients today, including many third and fourth generation policy-holders.
Lilbourne was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church and was active in his church, community, and with his beloved family throughout his life.
Lilbourne is survived by his four children, Gregory Hall (Justine), of Nashville, Tennessee, Jeffrey Hall, of Yellow Springs, Alabama, Zachary Hall (Regina), of Palmetto Bay, Florida, and Peri Hall, of Goshen, Massachusetts; five grandchildren, Jessica, Toni, Jeffrey, Jonathan, and Sara; one great-granddaughter, Lily Stokes; and several nieces and nephews.
Lilbourne is also survived by his beloved and trusted colleagues, Hilda Richardson and Linda Calvert. Both became part of the Hall family. Hilda worked side-by-side with him as manager of The Lil Hall Agency for 43 years, and Linda worked at the agency for over 35 years. In his later years, Lilbourne was able to live at home with the help of wonderful caregivers, especially Debra Jackson, Pat Goodloe, and LaKisha Winburn. He also leaves behind hundreds of friends and clients who will miss him deeply and remember him forever.
Lilbourne was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Elizabeth Mattox Hall, daughter-in-law, Susan R. Hall, and his four siblings, Merrye Hughes, Elizabeth Gibbs, Norman Hall, and Murray Hall.
Memorial gifts, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Salvation Army, the American Cancer Society, or Oakland Methodist Church.
